Living here in gods own country, we are blessed with some of Oz’s best white water rafting river rapids within an hours drive. In fact there isn’t another place in the country that can state that they have tourist rafting businesses doing business on 4 local rivers.
The rivers that are located at hand are the Barron River, Tully River, Johnston River and Russell Rivers, as well as numerous smaller runs that only are accessible in the wet season. This truly must make White Water Rafting in Cairns something unique. The Barron River Whitewater rafting and Tully River Whitewater Rafting operate using whats referred to as scheduled release. This happens when the water is set free at a scheduled time from an upriver catchment or Hydro Electric Station. These two are easily our most popular rivers with both full and half day tours operating daily. The Barron River has grades 2-3 rapids while the Tully has a more exciting grade of 3 to 4 and even 5 if it rains enough.
The Johnstone River runs for a few months a year, however offers wilderness Rafting extended trips with up to Grade 5 rapids. This activity is kind of expensive.
The Russel River has inflatable double sportsrafts, although a little bit different from the 8 man inflatable rafts, they are still heaps of fun and simple to learn. This river does however have a short walk in to the commencement point through some tropical rainforest. The Russel River has rapids in the range of grade 2-3 with maybe a few grade 4′s if it rains enough.
All rafting happens under the friendly guidance of highly trained river guides, and all raft operators hold the mandatory Government licensces and Insurance. So there is nothing to fret about if you desire to have a go at some white water rafting while on your break in Cairns.
